Pia Ranada, a journalist at Rappler in the Philippines, delivers a talk about the future of Philippine politics on April 26, 2023, at the Bechtel International Center. Ranada’s focus in her talk is the impact of social media on the political success of former President Rodrigo Duterte and the incumbent President, Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. 

An advocate of press freedom, Ranada is at Stanford University for a 10-month John S. Knight Journalism Fellowship. Journalism fellowships at Stanford allow journalists from over 80 countries to be catalysts of change in challenging misinformation and disinformation, holding the powerful accountable, eradicating news deserts, and strengthening local news, fighting bias, intolerance, and injustice.
